A Life Devoted to Care and Service

Claire Frances Murray passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital, at the age of 83.

Her passing marks the close of a remarkable life defined by unwavering dedication to nursing, education, and the well-being of others. For more than four decades, she served as a pillar of strength and compassion within the healthcare community.

Early Life and Educational Journey

Born on November 22, 1942, in Troy, Claire was the daughter of the late William Francis and Clara Irene (Bowen) Murray. She was raised in Watervliet, where she began a lifelong journey of learning and service.

A graduate of Watervliet High School (Class of 1960), she pursued her calling in nursing at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, earning her diploma in 1963. She later advanced her education at Russell Sage College, obtaining both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing.

A Distinguished Career in Nursing and Leadership

Claire Murray’s professional life was nothing short of extraordinary. She dedicated over 40 years to the Seton Health System at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, ultimately serving as Senior Vice President of Patient Services before her retirement in 2003.

Yet even in retirement, her commitment never wavered. She continued shaping future generations of nurses as an educator at Russell Sage College from 1985 to 2010 and later at Excelsior College.

Her influence extended far beyond the classroom. She held leadership roles in numerous organizations, including the American Nurses Association and the New York State Nurses Association. Despite her many achievements, she humbly described herself simply as, “a nurse”—a title that truly captured the essence of her life’s work.

A Life Beyond Profession

Outside of her career, Claire found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. She was a passionate sports fan, cheering for the Buffalo Bills and the Golden State Warriors, and closely following her nephews’ athletic pursuits.

She was also known for her beloved Irish Christmas Eve tradition, where family gathered to enjoy her signature dishes and celebrate togetherness.

Family and Lasting Relationships

Claire was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Sheila Santini. She is survived by her brother Bill Murray and his wife Irene, along with a large and loving extended family of nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandchildren.
